Traveling With A Toddler Tips

Posted on by Danil Alexandrov

Travelling with children can be a bit like shooting a herd of wild goats on holiday. Whether they're your own or someone else's, factoring a child's needs into your journeys involves a lot more than adhering on a CD full of pop songs and making bathroom stops. Here two Rough Guides writers share their hard wisdom. First up, mum of 2 Hayley Spurway offers guidance on traveling with toddlers, subsequently Ross McGovern reveals the way he handles to travel with older children. Hayley Spurway's tips for traveling with toddlers

Be Ready for the climate

It's simple guidance, but kids dressed comfortably for the weather and terrain will be more happy in a new atmosphere. With all the gear accessible, there's no excuse for dressing up toddlers in ski-suits four sizes too big, denying their gloves, or leaving them wrapped onto a beach where sea urchins lurk, more interesting ideas.

Don't overlook the medicine

Whether they're out of routine, jet-lagged, or eating less healthily, kids always seem to get sick on holiday. Dampen the effect of broken nights, frayed temperaments and fevers by packaging an easy-to-swallow medicine such as Calpol in the united kingdom. Other basic ingredients on your first aid kit must consist of antiseptic wipes, plasters, sting therapy, and a thermometer.

Have a number of family games prepared in case of delay.

Punch-buggy and padiddle are popular, if brutal, favourites for car travels, whereas more cerebral ones such as the Alphabet match are far safer for air travel.

Give them a camera

Giving toddlers their own (robust, child-friendly) camera motivates them to observe their environment and concentrate on what interests them. You could be surprised at the results from their knee-high opinion. Amongst pictures of feet and wheels, my three-year-old has shot flowers, critters, helicopters, ships, rocks and bunny poo.
